The 2.6.32 kernel is out
Linus Torvalds announced the release of a stable Linux 2.6.32 kernel. Major new features include the implementation of kernel-based mode setting (KMS) plus 3D graphics support for new Radeon cards, plus new kernel shared memory (KSM) technology for KVM virtualization, power-saving and performance improvements, and a faster "Devtmpfs" boot technology.
An important Linux (kernel) fix
Most of the time you can go for months, years, without patching your Linux distribution and not be in any real danger. A recently uncovered security hole in the Linux kernel does deserve your attention. Specifically, Earl Chew, a Linux developer, and, at about the same time, Brad Spengler, creator of the Linux security program Grsecurity, discovered that there was a possible null pointer error that could, in theory, enable non-root users grab administrator privileges. You don't want that to happen. This particular bug, known in developer circles as CVE-2009-3547, hits all modern versions of the Linux 2.6 kernel It's been fixed in the upcoming 2.6.32 RC (release candidate), but unless you're running on Linux's bleeding edge, you're not running that version of the kernel.
Released Gnome 2.28.1
This is the first update to GNOME 2.28. It contains the usual mixture of bug fixes, translations updates and documentation improvements. The next stable version of GNOME will be GNOME 2.28.2, which is due on December 16. Meanwhile, the GNOME community is actively working on the development branch of GNOME that will lead to the next major release in March 2010.
Released Kde 4.3.2
Kde 4.3.2 released on 6th october. It has a numer of bugfixes, like:
- Many crashers have been fixed in KDE's core libraries, bringing more stability to all applications
- KWin's window compositing effects have been further stabilized by fixing a number of bugs in effect plugins such as the famous coverswitch window switcher
